DOWNSIZING TO “RIGHT”SIZING YOUR LIFE

Our homes are our special places. They are a gathering place, offer protection for our families & house our memories. As our families change our homes can also become a place of burden. The cost of upkeep & the price of keeping a large home has led many to the decision to downsize.

A smaller space offers greater savings, a clutter-free life & more free time to pursue your dreams. When you’re ready give us a call & we can help find you the perfect place. Below are some tips from AARP that may be helpful if you’re considering downsizing.

  1.  Start early. The biggest mistake is waiting until you sell your home or tragedy happens. Start paring down at least one month before you list your current home for sale (less clutter makes it appear larger.
  2.  Have a plan. Hit the "heart of home" rooms first. That's usually the kitchen, living room & family room, which tend to be the most cluttered & contain items with the greatest emotional value & everyday use. Make four piles — keep, donate, give to family members & trash.
  3.  Involve the kids. One big problem is seniors thinking their children want that grandfather clock or Waterford when they really don't. A heart-to-heart about items' emotional & monetary value is in order.
  4.  Donate. Goodwill & the Salvation Army may be the first thought for donations, but items like Civil War memorabilia or fancy camera equipment may be better suited for a museum or school. Such legacy gifts may even result in special plaques or recognition in addition to tax deductions. Even everyday items may benefit organizations. Everyday glassware, for instance, will fetch little money at a yard sale but could be used at a children's camp or a soup kitchen.
